Providing disability support to those in need has been placed high in the priorities of healthcare outcomes in New Zealand. This is represented by a massive injection of funding for disability support services, totalling an extra $93 million to be released over the next four years. According to Health Minister Tony Ryall and Disabilities Issues Minister Tariana Turia, the aim of the increased funding is to improve access to disability services. The funding has been separated to target certain areas of disability support, including home and community support services, residential services for people with intellectual disabilities, supported independent living, respite care and other disability support services.

The reasoning for the increase in funding includes a new focus on assisting those with disabilities to experience fulfilling lives, with the assistance being provided aimed at empowering those affected by disabilities to do so. The provision of high quality health and disability support services is essential to ensure that disabled people can achieve optimum participation in the community and live an ordinary life.

The newly created Disability Strategy for New Zealand focuses on a system where long-term support systems are built that centre on the individual, their specific needs and the assistance they require to enjoy a full life and participate in the communities which they are a part of. Those charged with the responsibility of implementing the strategy include the Ministry of Health and Social Development in conjunction with the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC).

The strategy highlights the need for additional, qualified and experienced personnel to deliver the front line objectives of the strategy. This will result in an increased demand for suitably skilled nurses, doctors and other medical staff. According to the Ministry of Health, the type of worker suitable for this environment is one that is caring, compassionate and dedicated to facilitating the process of restoring, enhancing and actualising the potential of those suffering from mental and physical disabilities. As many of those who require such assistance suffer from mental anguish, trauma and other life challenges, individuals employed in the care of such patients need a diverse range of skills. Being able to combine professional with personal skills and interpersonal communication qualities is a trait suitable for a successful disability support worker.

If you are a health professional who is experienced in providing assistance to disabled individuals or a health care worker who desires to branch out into disability support, the new focus and investment in these services in New Zealand means that there will be ample employment opportunities. Enquire with a reputable healthcare recruitment specialist to see what the future may hold for you.

The grass in your lawn that is newly made from seed must not be cut until the stems are nearly 2 inch high. Therefore during the first couple weeks of mowing the mower should be set at maximum height and the blades should be very sharp. This is important as it can pose a risk to the young plants which can be pulled right out from the ground. The setting of the mowing machine can be progressively lowered as the grass settles down and is fully established which are some lawn mowing techniques you should know.

Just a day before mowing a newly seeded lawn and especially for the first time, make sure you take the mower over the grass with the blades disengaged. This is done to consolidate the soil around the roots of the grass and also pres in any stones in the path. How often you should cut would depend on the time of the year when you grew the grass and surely by the growth rate of the grass. The lawn made from turfs would generally have several months to settle down before the arrival of mowing season. However even the lawns laid out at the end of turf season should be sufficiently established to let mowing activity within 2 or 3 weeks.

So, when the grass settles down and is fully established, the best caution is when you have doubt about the grass strength. Therefore right mowing techniques are very important in mowing such lawn. As the season changes and summer arrives it is essential to change the frequency of mowing the grass over new lawn. The grass is prone to grow more rapidly during spring season and so it becomes more obligatory to mow the grass quite frequently.

Many of us look forward to the Summer Days and indeed, why not, when there are so many things for us to do? However, we do not look forward to the heat that some of these days usually comes with.

Nevertheless, instead of sitting down and complaining about it, we can jump in there and enjoy it as much as we can. Some of the things that we can do during this time are:

Read

If your library has air conditioning and yes, all library do not have them, you can go there and catch up on some reading. Additionally, with so many other things for our children to do, they may have been avoiding, going into the library and if this is the case with you, then this is the perfect time for them to go. Remind them about the air conditioning and see what happens. At home, you can also pull up under a fan and do some reading and try to get some sleep, if you can.

Sell Cooling Aids

You can encourage your children to make some Lemon Aid Drink and, or Popsicle to sell in the neighborhood. True, it will be hot outside and they will be in the heat but this is the perfect time for them to capitalize on this opportunity to earn some money. They can use it to do something that they had wanted to do. However, making sure that the selling area is shaded and the little ones are wearing hats, suntan etc. along with some water to drink, will help them to handle to heat.

Pool

If you have a pool, you do not need me to tell you to go in and cool out in it. However, if you do not have one, there are always indoor and outdoor public pools. However, you may need to get an early jump on that, because it might full up really quickly. If the children have an inflated pool, do not forget to pull it out of storage. Also, heading out to the beach and water parks will also be a lot of fun.

Are you glad that summer is finally here, and wondering what you can do to prepare for your child’s next school year? Would you like to learn about a few things you can do in the summer time that will benefit your child’s education? This article will discuss 7 easy to do things, that will help you prepare for your child receiving special education services, next school year.

1. Get an independent educational evaluation (IEE) on your child. A lot of times it may take a while to get an appointment, so make the appointment quickly. An IEE can help you learn what services your child needs, if they have any undiagnosed disabilities, goals that need to be worked on etc.If your child has autism, try and get someone who is familiar with autism. You could start your child’s new school year on a good foot!

2. Attend a training on special education issues especially on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Training opportunities can be found in your community, by calling different disability organizations. Try finding a parent information and training center (PTIC), every state has them.

3. Read a book on special education advocacy. Amazon has a lot of them, including my own; Disability Deception.

4. Try and meet other parents of children with disabilities in your area. Disability organizations in your area may be able to help you find a parent group. Also, try the Internet, lots of parent groups online!

5. Go through your child’s school records, and organize them into binders for easy finding. Then you will start the school year with organized school records!

6. After going through your child’s school records, determine if you need to beef up the documentation. Summertime is a good time to send letters so that your child’s record is well documented. Most special education directors or coordinators work year round, so are available to receive and answer correspondence.

7. Take time to enjoy your summer and your child! A refreshed parent is more able to advocate for needed special educational services! Have Fun!

Scrapbooking is all about creativity. But, as with any creative pursuit, there are always rules to follow which make the difference between a page you can be proud of and one that ‘doesn’t quite work’.

Here are 5 design tips/rules to keep in mind when creating your pages to ensure your pages always look amazing:

1. Your Photos Should Be The Focus

Every page needs a single focus and while it sounds obvious to say it, when you’re scrapping it has to be your photos.

Once you have done your rough layout take a step back, close your eyes then open them again. What hits you first with your page? If it’s not the photos then whatever it is is overpowering the real subject.

2. Uneven Numbers Work Best

When items are displayed in even numbers it almost ‘splits’ where our eyes look first. By choosing uneven numbers of photos, embellishments etc our eye is drawn to the central item. So, if you’re working with two photos try to position them so that they appear as one ie: next to each other or add a third element to balance things out.

3. Make Your Title Stand Out

One easy way to make your title stand out is to put the main word in large, upper and lower case lettering then fit a subheading right underneath it in capitals. The length of both pieces of text should be the same. It’s a little design trick that works on many things.

4. Use Triangles

No, I don’t mean draw triangles on your pages (although you can do that if you wish of course!) but use photos or embellishments in a triangle pattern. Why this works is that it draws your eyes from one element to the next, plus also adheres to rule #2 regarding uneven numbers.

5. Ensure Your Subject is Looking the Right Way

Make sure any photos you use have the subject looking the correct way ie: into the page. There is something very off putting about seeing a scrapping page where the photo subject is staring off the edge of the page!

How to Come Up With Scrapbook Page Titles From Quotes, Famous Lines, Lyrics and More

Making the connections

Discovering a movie title, a line from a song, a well-known phrase, or a lesser-known and eloquent line of poetry that connects your photos to their story is always satisfying. The following are ideas (and even a technique) for coming up with scrapbook titles that give your layouts extra punch.

Sometimes connections to well-know phrases are easy, as in “Soda-Pop Anniversary.” I made a page about my husband’s gift to me on our anniversary: a 12-pack of Diet Coke. Of course, the gift of a 12-pack of Diet Coke isn’t all that elegant and doesn’t sound all that special until I journaled about him biking to get it and carrying it home on his back. I wanted a fun title, so I played off the traditionally-recommended anniversary gifts (1st is paper, 2nd is cotton, 50th is crystal). This one just happened to be the “Soda-Pop Anniversary” in our house.

“Women Who Love Wool Too Much” is another fun scrapbook page title that was an easy connection to make. It features photos of my friends–women–knitting and yakking. We call our knitting group “Wild N Woolly.” Remembering the book “Women Who Love Too Much” gave me a twist that works for this page: “Women Who Love Wool Too Much.”

We all remember that video post on social networking sites featuring no less than US President Obama calling on parents to monitor their children’s internet activities. It simply relays the urgency to keep watch over what our kids may be doing online. True they are on their best behavior when they are on “POS” mode, which means Parent Over Shoulder, but children should be made aware of the consequences of what they post on cyberspace.

Make your children comfortable talking about what they do online. Open the gates of communication and ask them what they are interested in on the internet. Converse without judgment and you will discover what emotional or social needs they satisfy by engaging in online activities.

Most parents have a negative concept about the internet, but realize that this generation was born into an era of computers and virtual communication. The internet is an integral part of their lives, so don’t dwell too much on just the threats posed by the internet; rather be extremely aware that they exist, but also recognize that the internet is a dynamic creative outlet or tool for your kids to explore their talents, interests and potentials.

What your children do in cyberspace is a reflection of what is going on in their lives. Most kids join social networking sites to hook up with friends virtually, but keep close watch of kids taking on a different persona when they enters cyberspace. This may be a sign that they have been ostracized and have to put up with some pretensions just to be acceptable.

Explain the effects of revealing too much of their personal details without being antagonistic. Children will feel protected rather than challenged if you constructively warn them that once their photos, messages or blogs go online, these are no longer under their control.. So many kids don’t understand how this influences other people’s judgment on their characters, so present them a simple analogy and ask if what they post is something they will want their employer to know about, say five years from now when they step into their career paths.

In recent years, great efforts have been made to create more environmentally friendly products. Light bulbs have been around since Thomas Edison offered the technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, conventional incandescent lamps are inefficient and use a lot of power. Traditional types work by heating a tungsten filament inside of a glass envelope to thousands of degrees. As the filament heats up, light and heat are produced. These lamps can use a lot of electricity and need to be exchanged frequently when the filament burns out. Recent developments have included compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which work by exciting molecules of inert gases inside of tubes. They require much less power than incandescent bulbs and last many times longer. But one of the newest technologies is LED GU10 powered bulbs. LED is an acronym for light emitting diode. An LED is a small device made of a semiconductor that emits light when a current passes through it. GU10 LED light bulbs have several advantages over their predecessors.

LED GU10 bulbs are first and foremost very energy efficient and therefore more environmentally friendly. For the amount of illumination that they give off, these new kinds consume very little electricity. By switching to one of these, homeowners can save hundreds of dollars in utility bills over the course of the lamp’s lifetime. Not only that, but the environment will be spared the carbon emissions created by producing electricity at power plants. Also, CFLs can contain harmful chemicals like mercury within them. If they ever crack or are disposed of in an improper manner, they can pollute the environment with toxins.

Another benefit is that they produce very little heat. Incandescent lamps (and CFLs to a lesser extent) can get extremely hot. This can pose safety issues for small children, who may touch the lamp. Also, it reduces the chance of a fire. These kinds remain cool to the touch even after several hours of operation. The reduction in heat produced by these lamps can have a great effect on the temperature of a room, keeping it cooler than if it were lit with more traditional types.

Most parents are worried about having their kids at home during the summer vacations. This at all should not worry you but should be the chance that you get to spend some quality time with your children. It is important that you follow a good plan for the family activities. If you are not going to come up with the summertime fun activities for your children then you could just have some bored kids in your house for the whole summer vacation and this is certainly one problem. Here are some of the ideas that you can make use of in order to keep your kids fit and active during the summer season. It is important to encourage your children to engage in outdoor fun activities during the winter vacations so as to stay healthy and fit all the time.

Where to get started
The outdoor family fun activities are some activities that you can enjoy as a family and these at the same enable you to stay healthy and fit at the same time. The first thing that you need to do is come up with the theme of your family fun activities and work towards achieving exactly that. You may decide to have an outdoor theme or you can just play along with an indoor theme it all depends on what you want to do. The best themes are certainly those that include the outdoors as this is summertime after all. All you need to do is come up with the outdoor summer games and include them in your fun day.

Deciding on the day
You may not necessarily have these activities everyday but only for those who spend most of their time at home. The weekends can be the special days that you can set aside for you to have some fun activities with your family. These weekends should be set aside for fun only and you forget about your work and your busy lives.

The activities
Everyone should be involved in being involved in the activities and everyone’s activity should include all the members of the family. Many families always face the problems in that they may have both girls and boys in the family and it is natural that the boys do no want to get involved in the activities of the girls. Well, this is what you can do you can allow the boys to have what they like and include the girls into that activity and the boys must then also get involved in the activities that have been chosen by the girls. Yes, in these family fun activities you need to be fair and get everyone involved.
